Wonder Woman / Tide Question

Explore how media language combines to make meaning in the following media products: the Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) teaser poster and the Tide print advertisement (1950s)

- For Wonder Woman, you could argue that meaning is created through the overload of colours which could connote the super-natural nature of the film.
- We know Wonder Woman is a super hero film made by DC, our attention is anchored to the female figure in the centre of the poster who you would guess is Wonder Woman if you hadn't watched the films before.
- The mise-en-scene of the bright colours could act as a symbolic code for the superhero genre of the film as well as portraying a positive tone for the film. the bright colours could be overwhelming  for certain audiences.
- The female figure in the centre of the poster has the audience's focus placed on her however, unlike a lot of media products with a focus on a woman, Wonder Woman isn't overly sexualised with no skin visible to the audience apart from her legs which are mostly covered by the hallucinogenic background.

This advert gives off a stereotypical ideology, portraying the woman's lifestyle as a working, stay at home feel. the advert makes the woman appear to be happy to see the box of tide as it might make her work at home easier.
- The producer was most probably a male as the advert continues to bring on the dominant male vibes from the time of the advert.
- The producer may have created the advert this way to make the female audience happy to do this work at home, making them feel proud to use tide when doing their work.
- The idea being demonstrated is a stereotypical representation that women are good at cleaning.
- The symbolic code of the woman in the advert hugging the tide box suggests she loves cleaning. Possibly creating a matriarchal society?
- Could use Van Zoonen's theory of the male gaze and how women are placed in media products to sell them as men will be more interested  in them if there is a stereotypically attractive woman on the front of it
- the producer's ideology clearly showing the typical gender stereotype of women stay at home and do all the house work, and this advert in particular goes one step further and implies that they enjoy doing these tasks such as doing the washing because of how there are hearts surrounding the woman and the tide box, suggesting they're in love
A matriarchal society may be being created though the symbolic codes from the woman hugging the tide box suggesting she loves cleaning.
- The headings and the slogans are written in sans-serif font connoting an informal mode of address
- The bright primary colours of the print connote the positive associations the producer wants the audience to feel about the product
