Stereotyping and Identity

reinforcement - Keep supporting a point until it breaks through to the audience

Stereotype - A commonly held belief about a certain group of people

Stereotypes of Essex - self for-filling prophecy: There's no way out of the foretold story

why do stereotypes exist?

- Allows the audience/producers to categorise people
- Helps audience understand things; knowing what a country is like because of stereotypes
- Could potentially help us to stay away from danger; could have a negative effect though
- Allows audiences to identify characters and link to them on a personal level

Richard Dyer - The role of stereotypes:

- An ordering process
- A short cut (For producers)
- A reference point (For audience)
- An expression of dominant societal values: Nerds, Jocks, Comedic character, popular people.

Sometimes we use stereotypes without realising; like saying "everyone in Ireland id super nice!" but even though you don't know everyone in Ireland however you're not giving a negative stereotype towards the group.

Identity - Everything that makes up you:

- Religion
- Gender
- Sexuality
- Ethnicity
- Hobbies

Pot noodles advert - shows that the working class guy from up north in the advert, who was shown working so hard to achieve his dreams. the tattered and rough mise en scene shows the representation of being working class and working up from a urban background which would show an amazing story if he achieved success. the producers would have chose to shoot the advert in the urban and run down housing estate to stereotype working class northerners. he's known as TV ugly; the lower class and unimportant character. the advert almost makes you as the audience feel uncomfortable.
