Straight outta Compton has a pre-existing backstory

Pre-existing audience - The audience is already there before you've released the product, brings in                                            more money; sense of nostalgia.

They made the film about the N.W.A in 2015 because of how big they had become over the years and the new generation might not know the struggles of being a black person in America in the past. The police brutality, etc. The film already had a pre-existing fan base even before the film was released. The new generation may have only just discovered them through digital technology which would lead to a new audience. The film makes explicit references to historical events; the LA race riots, focusing on the theme of black mistreatment. Prior to the film's release Straight outta Compton went to number 2 in the American charts.
