Adbusters has been criticised for being manipulative; Adbusters is an anti-capitalist magazine which is seen to criticise those who have money and use it to buy things to  build their reputation instead of helping others most of the time; we live in a capitalist society so it's nearly impossible to get out of this cycle.

'We are constantly being manipulated by an elite ruling class. It is better to try and forget about inequality and to just focus on living our own lives'

The world that we live in is a very complicated place, full of inequality. Desensitives. We make hundreds of decisions everyday, some with the benefit of helping others and others making our lives easier. Adbusters is set to guilt-trip the audience, making us feel guilty and possibly even trapped.

When we buy things, we're distracting ourselves from where the money is going or inequality in general. We do things like this, make certain decisions to make ourselves feel better with our lives.

'Save the planet, Kill yourself' - Chapter 1

Breaches the IPSO guidelines on promoting suicide in a positive light.

The composition of the article is quite compact and empty, acting as a symbolic code for loss of life and depression. The article also lacks colour and images; black and white colour theme suggesting isolation. The two colours create a binary opposition with conflict of the two colours. The title reinforces the idea of emptiness, the faded and dark mise-en-scene connotes the industrial nature which further brings connotations of death and darkness. There is a binary opposition in the article between the way it looks and what it's actually talking about; when we first look at the article we think it appears boring, it's deliberately boring. The lack of images forces the audience to picture what is going on around the world by ourselves, helping us realise the problematic society we live in. The article has a direct mode of address through the constant use of the pronoun 'you', the article tries to be relatable with the things it's talking about; it uses a common day to day task of waiting in line at the supermarket, something we've all done. It does this, making the article relatable, to guilt-trip you. The title 'Save the planet, kill yourself' suggests that the world would be a better place without us, the reader. The language used in the article is blunt purposely, although it's quite sophisticated it gets straight to the point. Nihilistic sense; that life is meaningless, we're all going to die so why bother waking up in the morning because we're only going to hurt people. But we can't let this get in the way of our daily lives, we distract ourselves everyday from the fact that we'll be forgotten about after we die, and the world would be better without us.
