Les Revenants

A french supernatural drama television series created by Fabrice Gobert based on the 2004 film 'They came back'. The series debuted on 26th November 2012 on Canal+; which is the french network similar to the BBC. In 2013 the series won an international Emmy for best drama series. It came out in the UK 9th June 2013 on Channel 4.

Genre is constructed by genre conventions:

- Supernatural; theme of people coming back from the dead
- Gothic; themes of madness
- Mystery; the scene of Camille walking down from the mountain
- Family drama; focused on families
- Audience gratification, audience negotiation and textual poaching; when the audience reacts differently to how the producer wants them to react
- Zombie; people coming back from the dead however they aren't a typical zombie; no one eats people
- Horror; not a typical horror because it's not particularly scary
- French; they've selected actors that look french to reinforce the idea that it is french; a hyperreality of french people
- Cult TV show; when something has a small but passionate fan base

Steve Neal - Genre theory:

- It's important for audiences; allows audiences to identify what they're watching before they watch it
- Important to the producer as well so they know what they're making however this could lead to boring shows as they're following a set genre

To what extent is the show 'Les revenant' typical of its genre?

- It's a zombie show
- Completely atypical
- Setting is in the french countryside near the mountains so not stereotypically a location used for zombies
- The soundtrack is quite bland at first but when the butterfly bursts out the glass it then has a steady beat and it sounds like a typical mystery sound track; the theme tune is atypical.
- The setting isn't typically apocalyptic like all zombies and instead looks completely normal.
