Roles and representations

Steve Neil - genre theory :

different genre's are made up of different conventions;

Todorov - Narratology :

- All narratives share a basic structure that involves a movement that disrupts the equilibrium; a disequilibrium.

- All narratives are based around moving from one equilibrium to another equilibrium. Human's narrative is characterised by the constant disruption of disequilibrium; uses hermeneutic codes.

Anita is a binary opposition; she's a synth that believes she's a human. binary oppositions are used to create conflict to make the narrative more exciting and comprehensible.

Humans has a largely conventional narrative.

Humans makes sense through character arcs; storylines for each character which brings the story together.

Diametric opposition = binary opposition

Cyborg - Half machine/half human

Representation - How something is shown again; constructed by a producer. To construct an ideology through the thoughts of the producer and not the person being represented; to anchor the audience. Representations manipulate the audience for the purpose of making more money; always for financial purposes. Consistent exposure to certain representations cultivates the audience into believing them. Used to mould the audience into what the producer wants so that they buy the products again and again. Both the target audience and the groups being represented are impacted

Roles of women/synths in Humans:

- Mother
- Prostitute
- Nurse
- Friend
- Lover
- Gardener
- Slave
- Rebel

What is humanity?

We feel; we have feelings
We're self conscious; I think therefore I am.
We can speak
Language; defined on our language
We have rights
We have power
We have a sense of identity; I am me and you are you

According to Claude Lévi-Strauss, texts convey their meaning through a system of binary oppositions. Evaluate this structuralist theory. Refer to the set of episodes of Humans and The Returned in your response [30]

Binary oppositions are essential in understanding the complex narrative of Humans. One powerful diametric opposition is created between Anita and Laura through both fighting for the title of being a mother even though Anita is a synth and has no possible way of having a child. This constructs the ideology that anyone can be a mother, no matter your identity.
