Key scenes analysis

Mr Costa tying up his wife scene :

- The non-diegetic background music is an eery piano tune being repeated over and over which is typical of the horror genre as well as reinforcing the mysterious feel to the episode
- The preferred reading of the scene is most likely to anchor the audience in a position where they think what Mr Costa is overreacting and think he is going insane; makes us wonder what we would do in his position however we aren't sure of how many years it has been since his wife died but we can assume it's been a while because of the outdated picture of them we see in the scene where we first see her alive eating spaghetti out of the pan, acting as a hermeneutic code
- The representation of Mr Costa has been constructed through his nervous body language and questionable actions in the scene, with tying his wife up and burning her and all of their pictures together to eliminate all evidence of her existence from his life. To make the assumption that no one can relate to this scene would mean the majority of the audiences watching this would be shocked as he is now a murderer.
- The mid shot of Mr Costa watching all of the pictures burn while looking nervous adds confusion to the scene acting as a hermeneutic code but then we hear the grunting noises as someone as the camera pans down to Madame Costa as we see tied up and with a cloth in her mouth unable to speak; it's at this moment where we realise Mr Costa is going through with killing her and eliminating the memories of her.
- I would argue it forms a binary opposition between the stereotypical nature of old people being vulnerable and friendly, and the actions Mr Costa is carrying out with him tying his wife up and burning her alive.
- The low-key lighting of Mr Costa's room acting as a proairetic code suggesting something is about to happen which would be typical to the horror genre

Lena meeting Camille scene :

- The scene begins with Camille hearing her sister enter her room when she gets home and decides to knock on the wall which suggests it was something they did when they were younger which makes it even scarier for Lena when she hears it; Lena reacting to seeing Camille again is atypical for a family member seeing a deceases family member return because of her realistic reaction of her screaming and crying.
