Video game industry

Negative aspects of video games :

- Influences violence
- The stereotypical audience of "geeks, virgins, and loners"
- Influences audience more than any other industry

Video games industry are a specialised industry; The first video game ever was 'space war' created in 1962.

Japan made video games huge again after the 1980's video game crash, Nintendo brought out games with 'seals of quality' to ensure they brought out good games that people actually wanted.

Playstation then came in and advertised their console to adults in comparison to most previous producers who aimed them at children which changed the views of video games as they became more mainstream.

Due to such huge resources needed to make these large games, 1000's of people were being overworked in order to develop and produce these games in order to hit deadlines. Will very soon overtake the film industry.

Video Game - a media product with an interactive element with a                  hyperreal interpretation of reality

There is an expectation of interactivity for video-games; they tend to be produced using digitally convergent media; video games often have a competitive nature; you often embody a different character linked to relatability; there is an expectation that you will do violent, illegal things; they're more expensive than films to a large extent, films are usually no more than £10 however the majority of video games are around the £50/£60 mark, video games always have been expensive when they're initially released; exploiting the audience through the price through keeping the high prices because the audience will always buy; video games target a core audience, not multiple audiences.

Video games often have an open ended narrative. they're usually significantly longer than other media products.

Cross platform - Games that are able to be played on multiple different consoles

Some video games are funded by in-game micro-transactions

Assassins creed 3 : Liberations :

- 2012
- Published by Ubisoft
- Published initially for PlayStation Vita; then further released for the PS3 and xbox 360 with a HD version; Now released recently for the Xbox one and the PS4 (new consoles)
- PlayStation vita wasn't particularly popular, only popular in Japan.
- Themes of inappropriate natures
- Intertextual links to Django Unchained
- A dramatic and emotional narrative; appeals to a general audience
- Main character is a black female; its USP
- Looks like a movie trailer; hard cut to black with the lexis
- Gameplay; cutscenes are the non-interactive parts of the game
- we're watching the cutscenes of the game and none of the actual gameplay
- Promise of new content
- Trailer demonstrates high production values
- The game itself didn't do very well
- It is both a sequel and a spin-off of assassins creed
- There are many more different consoles than there are film distributors; e.g. xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo
- Games have ludic qualities; have a competitive nature
- HUD; heads up display; all the things you see on screen that aren't actually in the game world, so things like the map, your health, and your items
- Targets a niche/specialised audience
- Ludonarrative dissonance
- Some might not want to play it because "You're just walking around and you can't see the action"
-

The game is set between 1765 and 1777, and focuses on the life of African-French Assassin 'Aveline de Grandpré'. Developed by Ubisoft Sofia, Ubisoft Milan and Ubisoft Montreal which makes it transnational; produced by Ubisoft (horizontal integrated conglomeration); The game got an average critical rating but didn't sell very well, got a 7 out of 10 and didn't sell very well - only 600,000. "The game did not meet expectations". One of the game's unique selling point is that it is set in Louisiana. The Playstation Vita is a handheld console, it did well in Japan but underperformed in the United States and the UK due to the fact that their society is always on the move and doesn't require a TV. Arguably handheld devices give you an immersive experience however for a game like Assassin's creed it is hard to play as the buttons are all put closely together, games like this are harder to play on a handheld console. Games that perform well for handheld consoles are typically JRPG's. However the game was also released in Japan and also underperformed and was renamed to "Assassin's creed : Lady Liberty".

Super Mario Land -

- Always travelling right to left
- The whole game can be played within half an hour
- Has a simple narrative, unlike assassin's creed
- The goal is to save Princess Peach or Daisy however this isn't made obvious
- There are different ways of playing games
