Attitude and Zoella : Applying key theory

- Attitude magazine uses proairetic codes to keep the audience guessing and an example of this is the clickbait articles and this can be applied to Zoella's video names and thumbnails for her videos

- A diametric opposition could be applied to both Zoella and Attitude magazine in reinforcing a dominant ideological perspective in how Zoella is always promoting good health and diets in her videos and yet she often posts videos linked to unhealthy food like in her 'ultimate pizza taste test' and 'gingerbread Christmas cupcakes'. It can be applied to Attitude through how the magazine uses hyper sexualised images of men with most pictures of the men on their being shirtless with not much clothing on; focusing on aesthetics whilst the magazine also placing a focus on body confidence even though every model on here looks stereotypically attractive

- in Zoella's house tour video she goes through another property, one of which she doesn't actually live in and shows the audience around the apartment, the rooms look perfect, covered with Zoella's products. The video is a big advertisement for her brand and the apartment is a hyperreality of a house. In Attitude, it also may be hard to distinguish reality and simulation through what it's like to be a homosexual male, they make it seem like it's something so special whereas in reality it most probably Is no different to being heterosexual, we're all the same no matter our sexuality.

- an example for Zoella could be her common makeup videos and demonstrates the idea that all women like and wear makeup especially as her target audience is younger girls who may not have used makeup until they've watched Zoella. For attitude this could be that gay men have to look a certain way and if you don't look this way then you're not 'as gay' as someone who does look this certain way, creating a hierarchal ideological perspective.

- For Zoella, audiences may watch Zoella videos simply because they find them entertaining however some audiences, specially the younger audiences may look up to her as a role model through her videos. Some audiences may do both, it's up to the audience on why they watch her videos and relate to Zoella. For Attitude, Audiences may read the magazine to feel a sense of reliability for if they are homosexual, however some people who are heterosexual may also read the magazine for the simple reason they find it entertaining, it's up to the audience to pick out what they want from them.

- Gender can be constructed through a ritualistic act in Zoella through something like how Zoe acts in videos, playful, giggly, always baking/cooking which is stereotypically a women's role. in general, she constructs her gender through her personality, we know she's feminine through the way she acts.

- Gay people are 'othered' in Attitude though how the magazine is seen to constantly judge gay people, by what they're wearing, what they look like, how they act. Othering means that an individual or group of individuals have not yet learnt how to love and appreciate each other, I find this partially true about Attitude through the level of judgement in some of their articles.

- Zoella never really posts anything that could break regulations and guidelines, however, Youtube is self regulating and is quite strict on what is allowed. Zoella is very child friendly and rarely even swears. Attitude on the other hand follows ofcom regulations and therefore avoids posting harmful content on their website and in their magazines.

- Zoella has a range of makeup products that are distributed through boots, Superdrug, WHSmith, and house of Fraser. She's also released several books. Attitude on the other hand is owned by Stream publishing which are vertically integrated however they acquired attitude to reduce their competition in order to avoid risk.

- Zoella presents the repeated ideological perspective that makeup is what makes women stereotypically attractive, she places the idea into her audience's minds especially as her target audience is younger girls who are influenced easily by what they see online. Attitude presents the idea that all gay people wear clothing that makes them stand out, or that gay people have to act or look a certain way otherwise they're not 'properly' gay.

- Zoella's fans can interact with her through the comment section on her youtube videos or can buy her products through her website. Zoella's website is a home page for everything she is involved in: her youtube, her books, her recipes, etc.

- for Zoella, you could argue that the audience play the role of the producer just as much as Zoella does because of how without the audience, Zoella wouldn't be famous and would receive no income, she receives income off of her videos depending on how popular they are and therefore she would typically create videos depending on what her audience enjoys therefore making the audience responsible for her content. For Attitude you could argue that they have to post articles that they know their audiences would want to read and therefore keep up to date with trends, also placing adverts in there that they know their audience can relate with so placing adverts aimed at the same target audience as Attitude has.
